alertnet // Thin Lei Win CHIANGRAI, Thailand, July 25, 2012 -- The inhabitants of Ban Pak Ing Tai, a village in Thailand’s far north are opposing plans for big hydropower projects that would involve building dams on the Mekong River in Laos, largely aimed at selling electricity to Thailand, humanitarian news service Alertnet reported on Wednesday. According to the villagers, vital sources of their food, water and livelihoods - from fish and riverweeds to seasonal wetlands for agriculture - are fast disappearing due to Chinese dams on the Mekong, which flows through six countries, said Alertnet, which is run by Thomson Reuters Foundation.
