The Expansion of Mining Activities and Ips’ Rights in Mondulkiri Province
File under: Agrarian Reform and Access to Land
This study traces the expansion of corporate mining activities in Mondulkiri province since 2006. While mining operations promise to generate substantial revenues for the government, the disruptive nature of mining expansion poses potential threats to the environment and to local communities, especially indigenous groups. The study argues that responsible mining demands that free, prior, and informed consent be obtained from indigenous groups as a requirement for the approval of projects affecting their lands and resources.
